Scraps from the literary table

Since February, I've been sending out stories to literary magazines. I've sent out 50 submissions so far from my collection of linked stories, and although I haven't had any acceptances (except one last summer that they STILL haven't published), I think things are looking up. In the last month three journals have sent back stories with nice notes.

Hey, in this profession, I take what pleasure I can get out of the submissions process.

wow, fifty submissions. I'm way super duper impressed.

I sent out a poem yesterday.

And that's all.

Yeah, I know. I suck.

A poem? I'm shocked--shocked!

There is, of course, your 3 million page submission at the press.

I don't think I've written that much my whole life, and you did it in 2 years. So you should be proud.

yeah, yeah. I've written exactly two poems in my life, twenty years apart. I'm an expert poet, apparently. :) But I sent it somewhere I know will let me down easy.

as for the other...

I got my contest subs back, and apparently my books aren't very good. that's my excuse for being able to write so much.

Contests are difficult. They're so oversubscribed, and there are the recurring stories of judges giving awards to their former students. If there's anything that seems useful in the comments, then I'd use that in revision and forget the rest.
